“I have written so that you will know how people ought to act in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.” –1 Timothy 3:15
This verse comes after Paul instructs Timothy on aspects of church: prayer (2:1-8), dress (2:9-10), men and women’s roles (2:11-15), and the qualifications of church leaders (3:1-8). He wrote these things to show Timothy how people should act in church- which Paul describes as “God’s household,” “the church of the living God,” and “the pillar and foundation of the truth.”
Unfortunately, it is easy for us to have a lower view of the church than Paul has here. But we must consider his description and ask: As God’s children, must we not be in the His household to meet with Him and worship Him? As brothers and sisters, should we not desire to come together to encourage one another? Yet the church more than a place of worship and fellowship- it is the pillar and foundation of the truth. The local church is God’s plan A for advancing His kingdom in the world. It is the structure tasked with the goal of promoting and protecting the gospel message- God sending His Son to save us from our sin and bring us into the glorious inheritance of the saints. The church, then, is an incredible gift from God where we may worship Him, grow in the knowledge of the truth, fellowship with our family, and take part in the great mission of God in the world.
- Evaluate the importance of church in your life- do you view it as a privilege to go and be a part or do you view it as a chore?
- Pray for God to give you a greater love for His church.
“Thank you, Jesus, for purchasing your bride, the Church, by giving your life on the cross and paying for our sins. Please give me a greater love for Your church.”
