“In All Your Ways”

August 4, 2018

“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” – Proverbs 3:6

“Straight paths” are a result of acknowledging Him in all our ways. In the context of Solomon teaching his son wisdom, perhaps he had in mind going to war without consulting God as future kings would do. Maybe he had in mind the tough decisions of being a king, matters of judgment, taxes, or managing the finances of the kingdom. Whatever he had in mind, he included the possibility of everything: “in all your ways, acknowledge Him.” The wise person acknowledges the Lord in all their ways- because when they do, He makes their paths straight.

Do we acknowledge Him in all we do? In our waking, in our work, in our everyday decisions? Acknowledging Him is much more than just accepting that He is there, but humbly submitting to His reign and rule over our lives, and intentionally placing all we do into His hands. It means that in difficult situations and “easy” situations, we ask His help. He must ask Him for direction and trust as He guides us. We daily sit before His Word to learn His ways and will and set ourselves to not do anything that would be unpleasing to Him. We seek to please Him in all we do. If we place ourselves under His guidance, He promises to make our paths straight- a promise not that everything will go well and easy- but a promise that keeps us walking with Him, not allowing us to turn aside into sin and destruction, but works out everything to our good- to become holy like His Son (Romans 8:28-30). Matthew Henry states, “Those that faithfully follow the pillar of cloud and fire shall find that though it may lead them about it leads them the right way and will bring them to Canaan at last.”

Application

  1. Consider ways and areas you operate on auto-pilot and do not acknowledge the Lord. Ask for grace to acknowledge Him in these areas.
  2. Begin every morning acknowledging God before you get out of bed. Pray “Lord, today is Your day, and I am Your servant, help me to live for Your glory.”

Prayer

“Father, please forgive me for the ways I live without acknowledging You. Thank you that through Your Son I have unceasing fellowship with You and the Spirit to guide me. Help me to acknowledge You in all my ways. Thank you for keeping my paths straight.”
